Li'l Greedo

Continuing with my self-proclaimed Star Wars fan-pieces for the month of January, here's this weeks character, Li'l Greedo. This poor, little sad-sack of a character was a lot of fun to do. I like to think that he became a bounty hunter or hired thug because he was picked on as a kid due to his small, scrawny, and annoying personality. He was always grumpy (mostly due to the fact that he had to wear his cousin's larger hand-me-downs) although in reality, he was not picked on. He just suffered a little from a Persecution Complex. Something like that....anyway, enjoy! One more for the month and then I move on to something else for February.

I'm trying to do a fan-piece a week. I want to push myself to get out of my comfort zone. That's one of the reasons I'm trying a different approach to the cute style I normally do. I'm having a lot of fun trying to do more expressive poses beyond just the character standing there. Although I'll be the first to admit, of the 3 Star Wars pieces, this one is very similar to the Lucy stuff I do. They might not be actiony comic book poses but I'm trying. It's been fun so far and I feel like I'm growing. Especially as I use Illustrator. Hope you enjoy the continuation of my self-proclaimed Star Wars January. here's Li'l Leia.

Last week's Li'l Chewie was very well received. I was kind of surprised actually but really appreciated the words of support and encouragement. I had such fun doing it that I felt I needed to continue with something new thing week. And based on several comments made, I felt I needed to finish off the coolest duo in intergalactic history. My kiwi buddy Jez Tuya posted a great LOTR sketch piece on his blog a couple of days ago which inspired me. So I tried something new/different in Illustrator and really enjoyed what I came up with. Now, it's not LOTR but it IS a little fan piece. My cute li'l take on one of my favorite Star Wars characters. I gonna try and do more quick fan pieces this year. sym-bionic titan is back on the air! it has been for a couple of weeks but i haven't had time to post anything. but i dug thru my old files and found this beauty. here's the turnaround i cleaned up of the character kristin who makes an appearance in the episode, "The Ballad of Sacry Mary."

i believe Paul Rudish designed this character's turnaround. but i can't be sure as it was done last summer. enjoy!

since last friday's episode (Lessons in Love) of Sym-Bionic Titan was the best to have aired so far (come on, how can you not love an episode with a giant monster wielding electric powers, the booty jeans dance AND a Flock of Seagulls song?!?), here are some clean ups of Kimmy (the star of the episode) for everyone to enjoy.

these designs weren't part of the Lessons in Love episode but since i got to clean up the cheerleading episode too (Showdown at Sherman High) and since it's some more Kimmy, i thought they would be fun to post too.

Great Reference Book

my first professional gig in animation was on cartoon network's Class of 3000. and i feel very fortunate that my experience on that show yielded friendships that have lasted longer than the actual show. the art director, Valerio Ventura, is an example of such.

i recently was able to get a copy of valerio's book. it's simply beautiful! i recommend it to anyone who would likes visual development. here's a quick write-up taken straight from valerio's website:

Maryoku Yummy

several years ago, before i got to work on the powerpuff girls 10th anniversary special, i was working on a show called Maryoku Yummy with OddBot, Inc. the show was created by American Greeting and had a hard time finding a distributor but is now available for viewing on the new and improved discovery kids channel called the HUB.

i cleaned up backgrounds for the show and am excited to show the work. as well as prep the BG's for color. that means that after i digitally cleaned up the backgrounds, i broke up the BG into layers and filled in spot colors to help the painters finalize the painting. the crew were fantastic! and the show is really very cute. me and my son watch it in the mornings. go watch it. and enjoy looking at these BG's.

as far as i can remember, most of the BG's i cleaned up were drawn by Justin Martin (who has posted a lot of his rough BG drawings) and painted be Casey Mitchum. go check out their blogs, they have lots of goodness for the eyes...

Son of Rambo

i just finished this. i saw "Son of Rambo" recently and LOVED it. such a great movie. very funny with a lot of heart. it reminded me somewhat of my childhood and all the crazy things me and my brothers would do. all the shenanigans we would get in to because of our imaginations. good times.

anyway, i've been wanting to do a sketch just for fun. and after i did the sketch and illustrator clean up, i thought it would be fun to color. but not in the normal way i color personal illustrations. i decided to try something new - playing around but also pushing myself in doing a more comic book style rendering and playing with zip-a-tones, etc. well, this "sketch" turned into several days of me playing around and experimenting. this is the final piece. enjoy! and "god bless you evil scarecrow."

*my wife just pointed out that i misspelled the name. i spelled it the way the stallone movie spells it and not the way the actual movie does. it's "Son of Rambow." oops! but i didn't want to futz around in fixing it. sorry. you can still enjoy it though...

(i've been meaning to post this stuff for a long while now but always got sidetracked.) this post is in honor of Stephen DeStefano, whose cartoonstitute short i had the pleasure of working on AND who has a show called BLACK/WHITE: A STEPHEN DESTEFANO RETROSPECTIVE that opens tonight at the mdh Gallery in New York City! Stephen and co-creator George Chieffet will be there, selling and signing their new graphic novel released by Fantagraphics, LUCKY IN LOVE (out in bookstores as of yesterday)! The gallery is at 233 w. 19th street.

the short, entitled The Thundermanns, never made into final production unfortunately. it was about superheroes and i got to clean up some henchmen and props and EFX. here's a smattering of those. enjoy! and if you're in NYC, head over to the show and see stephen's amazing artwork! and buy his book too!

i posted a piece over on the Tiki Machine blog on friday and i wanted to talk a little more about it. it was a little background/location piece that was fun to do. it's an island prison so i wanted a simple island with an imposing looking castle/fortress/prison building being the only edifice on the island.

then i did what i normally do and go in to illustrator to clean it up and add brush strokes and whatnot.

and because brook keeps writing such great blurbs about the world of the Destiny Gauntlets, i want the art that accompanies the writing to be older looking. [i try on some pieces to have it not look so digital, sometimes i fail pretty bad.] but it's just fun art to accompany fun writing about our comic book.

so i took the illustrator file and dropped it into photoshop and played around with colors and blurs and filters. i'm not the best graphic designer around but i do enjoy playing in photoshop. there's a great website that has free and copyright free textures for anybody to use over at Lost and Taken. (i've had problems accessing the page all weekend, so there might be a server problem or something.) they had a great old burned book page that i thought would be fun to put the art on. once again giving it more "history".

Nerd Out Moment

ok,this post is more a complete nerding out moment than a post, although it will have some of my past work. chris battle, designer extraordinaire and all-around cool guy, just did an interview for the character design blog. and he posted said interview on his blog along with this teaser image.

well this special pose is from the Powerpuff girls 10th anniversary special that i had the wonderful opportunity to do the clean-up and color for. NERDGASM! click here for the interview.

so here are the images from my illustrator file. here's the file with the HD TV guides since we formatted the illustrator 1920 x 1080.

then since it layer was broken up into flash assets, it has like 30+ layers. the scene did have an "AB" pose for Sedusa, so here is the A pose.

and now the "B" pose.

you'll notice on chris' roughs, the Mayor waving. well, i included his "B" pose on the Sedusa Face "B" pose. when this rough came to me to clean up, i was so stoked! i mean, it was a sedusa pose!! it was one of my favs from the special. enjoy!

Recent Tiki Machine Postings

Within the last couple of weeks, over at the Tiki Machine blog, i've posted artwork for my upcoming comic book, "The Destiny Gauntlets" but didn't credit the artists who utilized their amazing skills to create. This was done, not maliciously, but to keep an illusion of immersion in the world that i created and writer Brook Chalmers has turned into a self-containing world. complete with folklore and myth and legend.

but i feel the need to give shout-outs to the artists, not just as awesome artists but as friends. here i go:

this world map was drawn by the fantastic Santino Lascano based on the idea of the making a world map similar to the old Tolkien maps plus a map done in the Art of Bone by Jeff Smith that was so inspiring. truly spectacular....thanks santino!

the penciller of my comic and suberbly talented and quick artist Rowel Roque continues to bring my world to life. he's the best to work with and needs to be recognized again. thanks rowel!!

Coloring Book

anyhoo - here's my contribution. it's a bad joke, i'm aware of that but it's the first thing that popped into mind while thinking about what to draw. it's almost muppet-like in joke quality. :) ok, maybe not. but it was fun to draw. special thanks to chogrin (president of the autumn society) for his suggestions at plusing the piece. i loved doing it. hopefully, the kids love coloring it....

it's been about a month since i last posted, well, i keep posting stuff over on the Tiki Machine blog as the whole group of us keep moving closer and closer to finalizing the illustrated book we're working on. since each artist can decide what his/her illustration will be, i've been flexing some artistic muscles that i'm uncomfortable doing - backgrounds (BG's). i had a specific "look" in mind and tried to get said "look" digitally but was unable. so, i busted out the old watercolor set with watercolor paper and tried my hand at painting. it's been years! these painting might not be the greatest ever painted but i'm pretty happy with them. not all have made the cut (which is funny since there are only 3). the ones i've liked, i've even scanned into the computer and touched up digitally. which has not only been exciting as i'm waaay outta my comfort zone but quite fun! enjoy!

My LOST tribute

one of the things i've been working on this year is a kid's book with my wife. it's not the original kid's book that we've had in the works for the last 3 years. more of a way to introduce our character and her imagination before getting to the story that deb wrote. it's going to be an ABC book and once i finish my pieces for the illustrated folklore monsters book and the first issue of my comic for Tiki Machine, i'm going to move on to finalizing the 26 illustrations. and the book will be printed next year.

ok, so having prefaced the post with that, it should help explain the illustration a bit, as far as my mindset and such. i wanted to draw something for my wife and thought that combining the future ABC book template and a tribute LOST piece would be fun.

so here is our character lucy, with her stuffed rabbit best friend on the island. she's a bit Claire-like crazy so be careful! :)

so my good friend and partner-in-comic-book-writing-crime has wrapped up his college learnings. and he asked me to draw him for the cake that will be at the festivities in his honor. as he is of scottish ancestry, i decided to make him william wallace-like. he majored in television/film production hence the standing on film cans. and since he's from the MacGregor clan, that is the actual tartan pattern. enjoy! and congrats brook!!

my good friend, mr. darrick bachman, recently purchased an iPad. and he's been asking all his artistic friends to draw something on it with one of the free sketching programs. here's my little 5 minute doodle, drawn wit me little finger. since darrick (like myself) is a true football fan, and with the world cup upon us in a mere 40+ days, i drew my passion and love for the beautiful game. enjoy!

Medieval Engraving

this is for the other blog, so the history of this piece is there if you wanna read about it. but i want to talk about how this came to be, design wise. so, i'm not too comfortable designing backgrounds. originally we at tiki machine were talking about designing an actual background layout for the post. and in under a week no less.

so i was pouring over my reference library and trying to do something that i wouldn't be too critical of. finding nothing that i felt i could do, i closed my copy of the art of the hunchback of notre dame and noticed the embossing on the cover. a real simple medieval looking cityscape skyline of paris. well, inspiration hit and this is what i did. it's all digitally done in illustrator. brushes, textures, colors, the whole works! (thanks to joe for the help as i was trying something new!!)

hey all - i'm in the process of starting my own self-publishing business with my great friend nate funaro. here's the logo that was a joint effort: nate designed the tiki head and tiki font, i added some texture and color to said tiki head and with joe game designed the machine text, bamboo and corner bolts. yay collaboration!! we have the blog up already, here. in the fall of this year, we'll be putting out an illustrated book on folkloric monsters as well as the first issue of a comic book i created and co-wrote. woot! so, head on over to the blog and see all the WIP artwork. become a follower because we'll be updating weekly with sneak peeks and whatnot. thanks!

another one of the shorts i had the opportunity to work on was derek drymon's "stockboys of the apocolypse" which unfortunately is not available for viewing. (that i can find) while i was doing clean up for the said short, i was asked to quickly clean up a prop from derek's other short "danger planet." i cleaned up the one design they gave me and then found out that is was the logo for not only the short, but the main model as well. ha! so, here's my one model clean up. enjoy!

back in the fall of 2008, after my brief foster's stint, i was able to work on several shorts for cartoon network's new (and short-lived) department called the cartoonstitute. and since most of the shorts are now available for viewing on youtube, i'm gonna show the ones i had the fortune of working on. starting with pete browngardt's uncle grandpa. here it is. enjoy!

i didn't do a whole lot as far as model design counts go. just a few props and EFX. and a couple characters which were a blast to clean-up. especially since they were all great monster/mutant crowd shots. here are a couple that you see right from the start.

so this one is in response to a request from brook. he finally got to name a hot dog over at vicious dogs and he wanted to plus up the sheet of paper explaining the dog on the counter. so, he asked me to draw him chasing 3 little pigs because the dog is called Brook's "3 Little Pigs" Dog. i enjoyed drawing it and brook liked it and most importantly, willy liked it. so now, for you to like it...

holy crap! i can't believe i haven't posted anything for 5 months. (not that anybody missed my riveting blog.)

but as the premiere date for adventure time approaches and promos are airing on cartoon network, i decided to post a promo piece i cleaned up. drawn once again by phil rynda, i really enjoyed this design. (i'll post the final colored version later. i need to find it on the ol' computer.) and the show looks amazing! if you are keeping up with the frederator blog, you can see all kinds of goodness related to the show. but they do forget that i had a step in between the rough and final colored models. ah well, such is the clean up position...

and the second is another ghostshrimp BG that i cleaned up for the main model pack. i actually cleaned up the 4 compass views of this BG but will only post this one....(for right now...)

The Vicious Dog Messiah

willy is the creator of delicious hot dogs and is the owner of Vicious Dogs, an establishment that i have previously posted about. the origin story of the Spicy Pappy. well, willy looks a lot like a real-life mario of super mario brothers fame. as a gift to him, especially because he so tastily fills our bellies every week, we decided to draw willy. here are our versions of our hot dog messiah. enjoy!

so on saturday, as me and my wife were settling down for some TV action, we were forced to choose between Conan the Destroyer and Braddock: Missing In Action 3. it was a tough choice but we opted to watch Conan. but we've been joking about Chuck Norris all weekend. to take it to the next level (and to clear my head after working on stuff) i drew my brand of Chuck Norris cereal. enjoy!

this is the original reaction of yesterday. our buddy pappy is leaving cartoon network and heading over to disney TV. and our gang sent him off in style. first we all were wearing wonderfully awful retro western shirts or in brook's case, a wonderfully awful bowling shirt. pappy absolutely hates them! it was awesome!!

8-bit and Beyond

here's a piece i just finished for another Autumn Society gallery show to be held at Brave New Worlds in philly. the show opening will be on Friday, August 7th, from 6-9pm. the title of this show is "8-bit and Beyond" thus making this show all about video games. being a video game geek in my casual before bedtime play, i went with a couple of favs. i have always loved the tomb raider series and have owed all but the original PC version. my wife absolutely loves Little Big Planet so i had to include the sackboy. and on the second floor of the studio is a 1979 Asteroids machine that i play very frequently. (it helps to ease the stress.) so i had to include that one too. here's the final piece, entitled "A Game Before Bedtime...?" enjoy!

ok. so there is this fantastic hot dog place in north hollywood called vicious dogs. just plain awesome. and a bunch of us go every week and enjoy the best willy (the owner and chef) has to offer. well, one of our group has been trying to get a hot dog named after him ever since we saw on the chalkboard menu "inspired by finn." last week, as usual, we went and enjoyed a great new dog consisting of a jalepeno and cheddar stuffed vienna sausage covered in chipotle sauce with grilled onions in a poppy-seed bun. the one trying to get a dog named after him (brook) wasn't able to go last week and participate in the new goodness. when we asked willy what the name of this new dog was, he asked us to name it. and we did. it's officially The Spicy Pappy. it's kind of an inside joke (Pappy is the nickname of one of our group) and a couple of us drew what we thought would happen this week. enjoy the hot dog goodness! the drawings are as follows:

ok, so that last post i did that talked about development work and finding a clean up style and whatnot, well, that style was not exactly what the guys or the studio wanted. so nick asked me to clean up another BG using different brushes. that result is this post. and it happens to be the style that was decided on. yay!

back in december i helped do some development work for the new cartoon network show Adventure Time. the show was trying to figure out a clean up style for BG's as well as characters so i was asked to take a stab at it. and by helped with development, i mean i helped clean up some BG's digitally staying as close to the original BG's as designed by Ghostshrimp for art director Nick Jennings. the frederator blog posted the original BG's by said Ghostshrimp and the final finished BG's by Nick but they missed a step: my clean up. and since it's posted online already, i shouldn't get in trouble for putting my step on. if you wanna see the beginning and the end, go here:

High School Logo Clean Up & Color

in august of last year, dave colman asked me to help him with a high school logo. and by help out, i mean do what i normally do - digitally clean up and color it. the high school already had the crest designed but they wanted a realistic cougar. our process was a little different than how we normally work. they needed everything to be vectored so dave drew the cougar first which i cleaned up using some cool new brushes i had acquired, he then colored it in photoshop and i have to recolor it in illustrator so it was vectored. here are the finished results. enjoy!

The Bumblejums!

for those of you who don't know, i'm art director for a pre-schooler website that is dedicating to teaching children how to care for the environment. The characters are called The Bumblejums and although the website has been up for a while now, des (the creator) and i have started a facebook group to help add to our exposure.

a kid's book is gaining momentum but still in the WIP stage of creation. every week, we will have eco-tips for the kiddies. this is the 1st of many.

i forgot to mention in the last post who the designers were whose work i cleaned up. they are shannon tindle and ben balistreri. both amazingly talented guys and linked on the side so check out their sweetness!

you might notice some grayscale characters. i cleaned up in grayscale and then the files went to janice kubo for coloring. if the characters color palette was a reuse or previously approved, then i helped out janice by cleaning up and coloring in the same pass. just so you know. and all that was supervised by art director extraordinaire, martin ansolabehere.

i almost forgot to mention in the last post. aside from the layout being done the traditional way of pencil to paper, these BG's are all digital. that was one of the most exciting things to do on the project was recreate the "feel" of the original show in a digital media. IE: the original show was all hand painted BG's etc. Craig wanted the special to be like the original but on a digital scale. so, no perfect lines or circles, everything needed to look hand-done but be digital. did that make sense? it did in my brain, so i hope so.

so the crew involved again is: Sue Mondt as Art Director. BG layout was done by Chris Tsirgiotis. Digital Clean Up was done by me. BG painters were Leticia Lacy and Su Moon.

oh! and it will air in HD format, so you'll see the HD frame on the files. with a place for the cartoon network logo in the corner...

ok. i think i'm safe putting these up. i saw that chris battle and joey giardino had posted some of their powerpuff girls (PPG) work. and i absolutely loved working on this special. it was awesome to work on a project that had some personal influence of me. way cool!! the schedule was crazy and i'm excited for when it airs in january.

now, i was digital clean up (as usual) starting on BG's but when the BG's were all done, i was moved on to help with digital clean up for characters, props and EFX. i'm gonna start with posting some BG's and eventually i'll post the other stuff. and some foster's stuff is coming too. i got my hands on the finalized color files so, in order to do right by everybody, here's the list of everybody involved with the final piece which is posted here.

today is the 2nd anniversary of the flash animation studio Oddbot, Inc. Congrats guys! so here's my digital shout-out. sketched this up in sketchbook pro then brought it in to illustrator for clean up and color. (my program of choice.) just used photoshop to save it as a jpg.

as promised...

here's several more pieces to the main title sequence. *reminder* i did the vector work and color all in illustrator for a studio called Art4Hollywood. the red box on some of these pieces (black on others) are the storyboard registration marks for HD format and these files are layered in illustrator. that way when they were brought into FinalCut or Premiere ( i'm not sure which program WB used but these are the 2 used at CNS) they could still manipulate differing pieces. for example, the post of the superheroes walking in front of a crowd with signs and cops. the BG is a layer. the angry crowd is a layer. all the signs are a layer. the cops are a layer and each individual superhero is a separate layer. that way in post-production, they could have each move at a different speed thus having the work move thru the screen. check out the DVD if you wanna see the whole of my explanation in action. so, there you have it. the how and what. enjoy.

New Stuff

hello there everybody. now i don't assume to think there's enough traffic on my blog to believe that i'm missed when i don't post. but i like to post and really appreciate the feedback from all other artists out there in cyberspace. i'm been crazy busy for the last couple of months with a couple gigs all at the same time. unfortunately, i can't post any of that stuff still. PPG won't be seen until the special airs in january. and i'm not sure when i'll ever be able to post some maryoku yummy stuff. (maybe i'll ask this week.)

but i can post the t-shirt design i did for my church. it's for a young women's camp and they wanted a superhero girl. not a woman. a girl, so no sexy. so, this is what i came up with. and in a style that i'm very uncomfortable doing. action animation is not my forte. that's my little bros specialty. so i looked at a bit of reference (you can see some JLU supergirl/Teen Titans starfire influence with some ben caldwell hands) and lots of sketches before i came up with the design. which i then took into illustrator (of coarse) and cleaned up. got to play with some new brushes and i'm very happy with the final. which was colored in photoshop. special thanks to deborah for her feedback and jayenti for helping fix a couple of problem areas. the camp coordinator really liked so hope you all like it too...

Justice League - The New Frontier

i'm excited about this post. and since the DVD was released today, i can finally talk about and show what i helped out on. in september, i was approached by a studio, Art4Hollywood, about doing some vector art for the new frontier direct-to-video project for warner brothers. i absolutely loved darwyn cooke's graphic novel! (if you don't own this, you're in dire need of help because it is the best in storytelling! both visual and written!! ever!!) here are some files of what i did that turned up being the main title sequence. like i said before, it is vector work so it was done in illustrator. both the clean up and color was my work in illustrator from the storyboards done by dave bullock. (very talented and i wish that i knew him but, ...alas!) i'll post more later but wanted to start with these 3 images. please enjoy! and go buy the DVD.

oh...and since i was subcontracted by Art4Hollywood, don't look for my name. i was a ghost. but one that got paid so....whoo hoo!!

this post is my anniversary present to my wife. the first year is paper which is an awesome thing when you're an artist. yeah personal drawing! it's the star of my wife and i's children's book, lucy. and this one is pretty much the finalized design. she's looking good. i just need to add a worn towel for a cape and we'll be ready to go. the book is written. i'm just ruffing out the page layouts. i should be finished with this by march with publishing to be finished before comic-con san diego. but i'll keep you all posted. enjoy!

(the BG is 55 inchs long so i had to break it into 3 pieces!!) the shoppers were done by artist whose name escapes me. since i had drawn and cleaned and colored deborah (my wife) in a previous post, i decided to take a shot at myself. (after said wife asked me, nay implored me to.) so after the persuading aforementioned, this is what i came up with and actually kinda liked. now, i have a cowlick which i hate but deborah says she likes. and i decided to put that in the drawing. so, that would explain the swirl in the middle of my forehead. and i look young because that's how i see myself. i'm essentailly a 12 year old with a driver's license. hope you all enjoy this as well!!

ok, so i posted all those rough sketches yesterday before i posted the question concerning all of you guys' opinion on the colored lucy. when i got home from the studio, i noticed that the roughs were kinda light. you don't get to see some of my subtler lines. especially on the quick sketch i did of my wife. so i decided to clean up the rough and color it. here it is.

ok. so i think i got the final lucy ruff.
